Kudarat ruled as the Sultan of Maguindanao from 1619 to 1671. He rose to power at the age of 39. His reign marked the peak of the Maguindanao Sultanate. Under his rule, the sultanate held sway over nine provinces. These included Lanao del Norte and Sur and Cotabato.
Kudarat was a wise strategist and politician. He formed alliances with rulers from Malaysia Indonesia and Brunei. He controlled rich trading ports and traded with the Dutch and Chinese. He also prioritized agriculture trade and commerce. This ensured food security for his people.
The Spanish tried to Christianize Mindanao. However Kudarat anticipated their plans. He launched coordinated attacks with the Sultanate of Sulu. They invaded Spanish-conquered provinces in Visayas and Northern Mindanao.
In retaliation, Spain attacked Lamitan Fort in Basilan. Kudarat was wounded and forced to retreat. He then rallied his fellow Muslims against the Spaniards. After years of conflict Kudarat achieved a glorious victory. The Sultanate of Maguindanao experienced peace from 1665 until his death in 1671.
Even today the location of Sultan Kudarat’s grave is debated. Some claim he is buried in Picong Lanao del Sur. Others say it is along the Simuay seashore next to a Jesuit priest.
Regardless of his final resting place Sultan Kudarat’s impact is undeniable. He died at the age of 90. He served and defended his people and his faith until his last breath.
