Look at this impressive stone sculpture! It is the bust of Suffren Reymond, a prominent figure in Monaco’s history. This monument was erected in 1937 near the house where Monaco’s first elected mayor lived. Suffren Reymond, who was born in Monaco in 1866, became an active figure in local politics in the early 20th century. He held several important positions, including Deputy Mayor in 1910 and Mayor of La Condamine in 1911. He was a lawyer practicing at the Monegasque bar and a member of the National Council from 1911 to 1914. In 1918, he was elected Mayor of Monaco. He died in 1920. This two-meter-high stele in pink and grey marble stands tall, supporting the white marble bust of Suffren Reymond. The bust was created by the sculptor Pizzio, who won a competition in 1935 to create a lasting tribute to the former mayor. The competition was open to all sculptors from Monaco and the surrounding region. The bust was sculpted from photographs of Suffren Reymond, showing him in a thoughtful pose. It is a remarkable reminder of the man who left a significant mark on the political landscape of Monaco. Today, the bust of Suffren Reymond stands as a testament to his legacy and a symbol of Monaco’s rich history.
