Envision a dog’s head. Now, imagine it’s a 550-meter-high rock promontory. This is Tête de Chien.

Tête de Chien stands proudly near La Turbie. It resides in the Alpes-Maritimes department of France. Overlooking Monaco, it’s the highest point on the Grande Corniche road.

Its name intrigues many. Some believe “Tête de Chien” or “Testa de Can” is a corruption. Samuel S. Cox thought it came from “Testa de Camp”. That means “Field Head”. He suggested Caesar stationed troops here after conquering Gaul.

Others like Gustave Saige described it differently. He saw “a vertical escarpment of circular shape”. To him, it clearly resembled a dog’s head.

Interestingly, Tête de Chien held military importance. Its strategic position impacted Monaco’s fortress in the 18th century. Artillery advancements meant Tête de Chien could easily target the city.

From Tête de Chien, the views are stunning. You can see Italy, Cap Martin and Monaco. The panoramic vista stretches to Cap Ferrat. Nice Airport and the Esterel Massif are also visible.

In 1884, General Raymond Adolphe Séré de Rivières oversaw the completion of the fort of the Tête de Chien. This was during the Belle Époque. It highlights the era’s focus on defensive constructions.

Adding to its mystique, a tale of aviation unfolds. In 1944, Leopold Bohm was stationed here. He witnessed a plane crash into the sea. This event has sparked speculation. Some believe it was the final flight of Antoine de Saint-Exupéry.

Whether you see a dog’s head or a tortoise. Whether you ponder its military past or its possible link to Saint-Exupéry. Tête de Chien offers more than just a view. It provides a unique perspective on history and landscape. Its beauty extends from Italy to the Esterel. Tête de Chien remains an unforgettable Riviera landmark.
