Ever wondered where Siemens employees once parked? This is S\u00fcdseite. Today, S\u00fcdseite is a vibrant urban quarter in Munich. It lies in the Thalkirchen-Obersendling-Forstenried-F\u00fcrstenried-Solln district.
S\u00fcdseite covers almost 20 hectares. It houses around 1,000 apartments. These are spread across five tower blocks and lower buildings. Around 2,300 residents call S\u00fcdseite home. Eventually, about 1,000 jobs will be available here.
The area stretches to Sankt-Wendel-Stra\u00dfe and Colmarer Stra\u00dfe in the east. To the south, it reaches Siemensallee. The western border is Baierbrunner Stra\u00dfe. A railway line bisects S\u00fcdseite. Trains like the Bayerische Oberlandbahn pass through here. The Siemenswerke station is at the quarter’s north end.
Interestingly, the boundary between Thalkirchen and Obersendling runs between the tracks. S\u00fcdseite belongs to both districts. A pedestrian underpass is the only connection between the two sides of the railway.
East of the tracks, you will notice five uniquely designed tower blocks in a park. Each has 16 floors. They have individual names like Sternenhimmel and Alpengl\u00fchen. To the north, near Koppstra\u00dfe, a small commercial area is emerging.
West of the railway, discover a park with a large playground. Here is also the VIVA S\u00fcdseite shopping center. You can find a municipal daycare center, a primary school, and a medical center. A residential block, a nursing center, and a nursing academy are also located here.
Both green spaces in S\u00fcdseite are car-free zones. Underground parking garages are available. West of Baierbrunner Stra\u00dfe is a commercial area. It houses a Siemens data center and the Chinese Consulate General. To the south is the empty 75-meter Siemens high-rise. A private student residence is nearby.
The S\u00fcdseite district sits largely on former Siemens parking lots. Siemens Real Estate had a similar project named Isar S\u00fcd from 2000 to 2008. However, it was never realized. Diener & Diener Architekten won the urban planning competition. Construction began in 2011. The first residents moved in 2012. The new quarter was completed in 2014.
The residential area east of the railway is car-free above ground. A shared underground garage has entrances from three sides. Unusually, waste disposal for the tower blocks also uses this garage. The commercial area on Koppstra\u00dfe is accessible for vehicles from the north.
S\u00fcdseite offers a blend of living, working, and leisure. The VIVA S\u00fcdseite provides essential services. It also offers sports, wellness, and medical facilities. The student residence has modern apartments and shared spaces.
