Envision this exquisite oval space. You stand before the Südlicher Pavillon mit Renatuskapelle in Munich a masterpiece of Bavarian High Baroque. This isn’t just a building it’s a testament to faith artistry and the enduring power of love.

The Südlicher Pavillon with its Renatuskapelle wasn’t always here. Before its construction in 1686 it replaced a smaller structure the Renatusklause. This older chapel was founded by Duke Wilhelm V. He ruled from 1579 to 1598. Unfortunately it had to be demolished to make way for the new Lustheim Palace.

The chapel’s construction was commissioned by Prince Elector Max Emanuel. It was dedicated in 1688 to Saint Renatus. He was the patron saint of Wilhelm’s wife Renata of Lorraine. This adds a personal touch a loving tribute woven into the very fabric of this place.

The Renatuskapelle’s design draws inspiration from Roman models. Specifically the great Baroque architect Giovanni Lorenzo Bernini heavily influenced the oval shape. Note the stunning stucco angels framing the altar. They appear to lift the altarpiece towards heaven. It’s breathtaking.

Johann Anton Gumpp created the glorious dome fresco depicting the glory of Saint Renatus. Giovanni Trubillio painted the altarpiece showing Saint Renatus praying before the Madonna. The exquisite detail is simply mesmerizing. Many South German Baroque artists drew inspiration from this unique oval chapel.

Restoration work on the Südlicher Pavillon began in 1995. The Renatuskapelle’s restoration concluded in 2004. It was carefully restored to its 1689 appearance. Amazingly much of its original ochre-yellow and white facade remains intact. This is a testament to the quality of the original construction and the painstaking restoration work.

The Südlicher Pavillon mit Renatuskapelle stands as a counterpoint to its Northern counterpart. The Nördlicher Pavillon which was also commissioned by Prince Elector Max Emanuel starting in 1689. It was designed by the same architect Henrico Zuccalli. Interestingly the records refer to the Northern Pavilion as a ‘so-called stable’.

The Südlicher Pavillon mit Renatuskapelle isn’t merely a building. It’s a vibrant piece of Bavarian history a testament to the power of faith and the artistry of the Baroque period. It’s a place where history whispers and artistry shines. So take a moment to absorb its beauty. Let its grandeur move you. The Südlicher Pavillon with its Renatuskapelle awaits your continued exploration.
