Here in East Tāmaki lies a volcano that time almost forgot. This is Styaks Swamp. It is a reminder of Auckland’s fiery past.

Styaks Swamp might not look like much today. Industrial development now covers its crater. But nearly 20000 years ago, this place was a scene of dramatic volcanic activity.

Styaks Swamp erupted about 19600 years ago. This eruption left a 200-meter-wide explosion crater. A tuff ring surrounded it. Today, it is hard to picture the scale of that event.

The lava flow from Styaks Swamp reached quite far. It extended as far as the Burswood subdivision. This is several kilometers away. Imagine molten rock flowing across the landscape.

During the early colonial era, Styaks Swamp was part of John Styak’s farm. The crater contained a swamp then. This is how it got its name. Now, it is hard to believe that this industrial area was once a swampy volcano.

Styaks Swamp is part of the Auckland volcanic field. This field has about 53 volcanoes. Each one erupted only once. Rangitoto is the most recent one. It erupted about 600 years ago.

You might wonder about the dangers of living near a volcanic field. Experts monitor the area for any signs of activity. They use seismometers to detect small tremors. These tremors could warn of an impending eruption.

Green Hill, also known as Greenmount, is nearby. You can see it from Polaris Place. Polaris Place is the closest you can get to Styaks Swamp without trespassing. Greenmount Reserve is also next door. It offers public toilets.

Styaks Swamp is a testament to Auckland’s dynamic geological history. It is a reminder that even under industrial areas, nature’s power lies dormant. So the next time you pass through East Tāmaki, remember the volcano beneath your feet. Imagine the fiery eruption that created Styaks Swamp. It shaped the landscape we see today.
