Originally housing the law school, Stuart Hall stands before us. It is a Gothic-style limestone building. Today, Stuart Hall hosts University of Chicago events and programs. This building has quite a story.
Stuart Hall’s construction dates back to 1904. The architectural firm of Shepley, Rutan, and Coolidge designed it. Their design drew inspiration from Kings College at Cambridge University. This gives Stuart Hall a unique and distinguished look.
Stuart Hall features solid masonry exterior walls. Decorative and flat ashlar Bedford limestone clads these walls. Look closely and you’ll see the details. The limestone masonry includes window lintels, cornices, and mullions. These elements add to the building’s architectural beauty.
The limestone cladding is supported by steel lintels. These are above the windows. Steel shelf angles provide relief at each floor level. U-shaped stone strap anchors connect the limestone to the brick masonry back-up wall. This multi-layered construction ensures durability.
In 2017, the University of Chicago initiated a historic restoration of Stuart Hall. ZS was retained to provide design services. Their task was to repair targeted exterior wall elements. The construction work started in the summer of 2017. Importantly, the building remained occupied and functional during the repairs.
The restoration project involved several key tasks. Damaged limestone units were replaced. These included window lintels and tracery window heads. They also replaced tracery window jambs, stone corner units, and decorative Dutchman units. Ashlars, window mullions, and window jambs were renewed.
Window perimeter sealant was replaced. Tuckpointing of mortar joints was performed. The project also included construction administration and observations. These efforts ensured the restoration was completed to a high standard.
Harold Leonard Stuart Hall stands at 5835 S Greenwood Ave. Room 102 houses some of its activities. You can reach it easily by bus or train. Bus routes 170, 171, and 172 will get you here. The Electric Main train line stops at 59th Street. Stuart Hall is a short walk from there.
The buildings of the Main Quadrangles, including Stuart Hall, were designed in the Collegiate Gothic style. Cobb, Shepley, Rutan and Coolidge, and Holabird & Roche were among the architectural firms involved. Their work has created a cohesive and impressive campus environment.
Looking east from inside the quads, you can admire Stuart Hall. Its presence reflects the University of Chicago’s commitment to preserving its architectural heritage.
