Imagine a time before Munich was the vibrant city it is today. A time when the land was primarily forest, with just a few scattered settlements. Deep in this forest, on the edge of a glade, stood a humble farm. This was Streiflach, a name that evokes the clearing in the woods.

The history of Streiflach goes back even further than that humble farm, all the way to the 15th century. This small hamlet, now a part of the larger community of Germering, was once a property of the Monastery of St. Jakob am Anger in Munich. The monks cultivated the land and farmed the area, a testament to the rich agricultural history of Bavaria.

The name Streiflach derives from the Bavarian word “sträffen,” meaning “to clear,” and “lohe,” which refers to a forest. The monks, in clearing the land for farming, left their mark on the history of Streiflach. Later, in the 19th century, a small but significant structure was built: the Marienkapelle.

The Marienkapelle was a simple chapel, a place of worship for the local community. This small chapel is a sign of the deep religious beliefs of the people of Streiflach and a reflection of the importance of faith to the Bavarian community.

Today, the Marienkapelle stands as a reminder of Streiflach’s rich past. While much has changed since the days of the monks, the small hamlet continues to stand as a quiet testament to the enduring spirit of Bavaria.
