Lost in the labyrinthine lanes of George Town stands the “Narrowest Five Foot Way” a captivating steel wire art piece. It’s a snapshot of Penang’s vibrant multicultural past. The artwork is part of the “Marking George Town” project. This project aimed to celebrate George Town’s unique character after its 2008 UNESCO World Heritage Site designation. Fifty-two sculptures were created for the project. They depict the everyday lives and stories of George Town’s inhabitants.

The “Narrowest Five Foot Way” sculpture originally featured five figures. Each represented a different ethnic group. These included a Chinese Amah a young boy a coolie and an English gardener. An Indian Dhobi Wallah carrying laundry was also part of the original piece. Today only four figures remain. The Dhobi Wallah is sadly missing. Perhaps he was removed or maybe even stolen. The remaining figures stand tall. They represent Penang’s rich multiracial heritage. The artwork’s placement along Lorong Stewart Street is fitting. This street is famous for its narrow lanes.
