Here stands Strandgårdskolen. It is more than just a school. It is a testament to community, reform and resilience.

Strandgårdskolen’s story began in 1875. Back then it was known as Ishøjs Fri- og Efterskole. Today it stands proudly as Strandgaardsskolen.

The school is centrally located in Ishøj. It offers a large outdoor area for its students. But there is more to this school than just location and history.

In 2010, Strandgårdskolen underwent a partial demolition. It was renovated using a stripping principle. This meant demolishing down to the load-bearing structures.

This renovation transformed Strandgårdskolen into a national example project. It showed how renovation can enhance learning. The project optimized the physical environment. It encouraged shared use of spaces. It also integrated outdoor areas into teaching. Terraces and science gardens became classrooms. Playgrounds encouraged movement.

The building also focused on creating an optimal indoor climate. Natural materials and good room heights were key. Natural ventilation was achieved via ventilation chimneys. Daylight streamed in through atrium courtyards.

The renovation incorporated many eco-friendly features. These minimized operating costs for electricity and heating. Insulation in walls and roofs was increased. High-performance window elements were installed. A centrally controlled regulation system manages all technical installations.

Strandgårdskolen serves a socially challenged area. 78% of its students are bilingual. The school has become a focal point for the surrounding residential area. After the renovation, the school attracted more kindergarten students.

The success of Strandgårdskolen is due to collaboration. Ishøj Municipality, Dominia A/S and Robow arkitekter worked together. Elindco also played a vital role. The school remained open during the entire renovation.

The school’s leadership team includes School Principal Jan Mindegaard. Vice Principals are Lea Tøttrup Christiansen and Tom Lillie. Preben Jakobsen is the Lower School Leader. Casper Christensen leads the after-school program. Poul-Gerhard Ø. Pedersen is the technical service manager.

Strandgårdskolen is not just bricks and mortar. It is a vibrant hub of learning and community. It stands as a testament to what can be achieved through vision and cooperation.
