Stoneleigh Baptist Church wasn’t always here in this specific location. Its origins trace back to 1934. Christians moving to Stoneleigh needed a place to worship. They began meeting in a sports pavilion. Later they moved to a school building now known as Nonsuch Primary School.
The original church hall was constructed in 1935. On January 4 1936 Stoneleigh Baptist Church was officially established. Reverend Aubrey Moore from Cheam Baptist Church guided the process. Thirty-six founding members signed a declaration pledging their faith. Their words echo even today a testament to their commitment.
The church faced numerous challenges. The initial congregation worshipped in temporary spaces. They dreamed of a permanent building. That dream came true in 1962 when the main church building opened. The original hall then became the church hall.
Further growth led to a major redevelopment project. It began in 1997 and concluded in 1998. Nearly everything was demolished and rebuilt. The main church building was adapted. Flexible seating and partitions were added. This ensured the church could meet future needs.
Stoneleigh Baptist Church continues to serve its community. It offers various programs for children and adults. The church hosts weekly events including a Tuesday morning cafe a toddlers group and a children’s club. A monthly Messy Church adds to its vibrant activities.
