Ever imagine a depot where London Underground trains do a U-turn? Welcome to Stonebridge Park Depot, a vital hub for the Bakerloo line. Opened in 1979, Stonebridge Park Depot became essential when the Bakerloo line’s Stanmore branch joined the Jubilee line. This restructuring demanded new facilities. Stonebridge Park Depot rose to the challenge, becoming the Bakerloo line’s main depot. This depot, nestled northwest of Stonebridge Park station, houses trains dating back to 1938, 1959, and 1972. It even temporarily hosts Northern line’s 1972 Stock for overhauls. Stonebridge Park Depot isn’t just a storage space. It’s where the magic happens. Two main sheds, tracks 31 to 38 and 39 to 44, provide shelter and maintenance areas. The westernmost tracks even have pits between the rails. Three open-air sidings, 45 to 47, offer additional space, two added around 1989. In 2002, this depot housed twelve trains. Now, here’s the quirky part. At Stonebridge Park Depot, trains are turned to run on the Bakerloo line. The ‘A’ end faces south, and the ‘D’ end faces north. This unusual setup allows shunting from a middle driving motor car of a four-car unit. This is much more efficient than using the shunting cabinet on a three-car unit. So next time you ride the Bakerloo line, remember Stonebridge Park Depot, the place where trains turn around and history comes alive.
