Granite whispers tales of centuries gone by here at Stjær Kirke. This Romanesque village church stands as a testament to time. It is located in the village of Stjær. The village is approximately 9 km north of Skanderborg.

Stjær Kirke was built in the 1100s. Imagine the skilled hands that carefully placed each stone. The church has seen many changes. It has been modified since its original construction. These modifications occurred during the Middle Ages. More changes happened in the 1800s. New interior elements were added then.

The church consists of a chancel and nave. These were built in the Romanesque style. Granite blocks form their walls. The tower dates back to the late Middle Ages. It is constructed from granite and monk bricks.

Once upon a time a newer porch stood here. It was later torn down. This was done to reveal the impressive granite relief. It surrounds the south door. This relief is considered a masterpiece. It is one of Jutland’s finest granite works.

Stjær Kirke belongs to the Stjær parish. It is part of the Storring-Stjær Pastorate. This pastorate includes Storring and Stjær churches. It falls under the Skanderborg provsti. This provsti is part of the Aarhus Stift.

Historically Stjær Sogn was linked to Storring Sogn and Galten Sogn. These three parishes were part of Framlev Herred. This herred was located within Aarhus Amt. In 1970 Storring-Stjær-Galten formed Galten Kommune. In 2007 Galten Kommune became part of Skanderborg Kommune.

Today Stjær Kirke continues to serve its community. It is a place of worship and reflection. It stands as a landmark in Stjær. Take a moment to appreciate the history. Think about the people who have passed through its doors. Stjær Kirke remains a vital part of the region’s cultural heritage. Its stones hold stories of faith. They echo through the ages.
