Envision Stilling Kirke standing here for over 800 years. The Stilling Kirke is located in the eastern part of Stilling. It is about 5 km northeast of Skanderborg’s center. This church has a rich history. It has seen many changes over the centuries.
Stilling Kirke was built around the 12th century. The choir and nave were constructed around 1200 using granite blocks. The church once had a tower, which was made of bricks. Unfortunately, it deteriorated. It was torn down in the early 19th century. This was done to save money on maintenance. Stilling Kirke stands out because it does not have a tower.
The altarpiece and pulpit suffered damage. Bavarian soldiers destroyed them half a century later. A piece of the pulpit was reused. It became a hymn board. The south porch and roof turret are more recent. They date back to 1886.
Look closely at the portals. The south and north portals have been preserved. However, the northern one is bricked up. The tympanum decorations are very interesting. They feature two opposing animals inside a double arcade. In the north, you’ll see two lions. In the south, there is a griffin and a lion.
Inside Stilling Kirke, there are more fascinating details. On the vault of the nave, there is a painted decoration. It dates from around 1500. It likely represents the arms of Christ and the arms of Aarhus Bishop Niels Clausen. A newer altarpiece was installed in 1980. Above the altar, there is an asymmetric gilded bronze plaque. It has reliefs on both sides.
On the north wall of the nave, you can see a chancel arch crucifix. It dates from 1400 to 1425. There is also a Romanesque lion font. It includes a brass basin. Stilling Kirke has undergone several renovations. These renovations occurred particularly in the late Middle Ages and the 1800s.
