Beneath a dome that resembles a giant golf ball sits the Sternwarte Stutensee. This observatory isn’t just a place for stargazing. It’s a testament to the passion and dedication of a community. The Sternwarte Stutensee sits atop the Thomas-Mann-Gymnasium. It started as an idea, almost an April Fool’s joke, emailed by physics and astronomy teacher Hartmut Aichert in April 2024. The email announced the observatory’s construction. Many dismissed it, given the date. But Aichert’s vision was no joke. By October 2024, the dome was hoisted onto the roof by the Stutensee Bauhof. The key was handed over, and the Thomas-Mann-Gymnasium took charge. The observatory houses impressive equipment. Aichert personally retrieved the 8,000-euro telescopes from Munich. He wanted to avoid any delivery delays. The installation and additional equipment brought the total cost to over 20,000 euros. Students Jost von den Driesch and Jonas Wackershauser dedicated five hours to installing the observatory’s computers. They also got the dome’s motors working for both the hatch and rotation. The telescopes are designed for automatic alignment. For this, the students established communication between the main program and the bases of all three telescopes. The Sternwarte Stutensee wasn’t built overnight. It involved meticulous planning, dedicated fundraising, and countless hours of work. It stands as a beacon of scientific curiosity, inspiring students and the community to look up at the stars and wonder.
