A beacon of Kassel’s skyline, the Sternhochhaus, has quite a story to tell. Right here, at the corner of Untere Königsstraße, stands Kassel’s tallest residential building. The Sternhochhaus isn’t named for its shape, but rather for its proximity to the “Stern” intersection. The building, all 55 meters of it, dominates the Wesertor district. Completed in 1969, the Sternhochhaus quickly surpassed the Wintershall-Hochhaus, snatching the title of Kassel’s tallest building. For decades, a prominent symbol graced its roof: the three-pointed Mercedes star. Imagine this towering structure, crowned by that iconic emblem, gleaming against the sky. The star wasn’t just decorative; it was a source of advertising revenue for the building’s owners, secured through a deal with Daimler AG. However, all things must end. In December 2021, the Sternhochhaus bid farewell to its sparkling crown. The Mercedes star was dismantled, destined for the scrap heap. Today, the Sternhochhaus continues to serve as a prominent landmark in Kassel. It houses apartments, offices, and storage units, a blend of residential and commercial space within its 18 floors. The GWH Wohnungsgesellschaft mbH Hessen acquired the building in 2016 for a hefty 14 million euros. So, next time you gaze up at the Sternhochhaus, remember its story: a tale of height, a famous intersection, a gleaming star, and a significant investment.
