It was a journey that spanned the distance of many miles and also spanned time, as their family grew to include eleven children. They arrived at what is now Rockwall County in March 1846, in a journey that would affect the historical landscape of this part of Texas.

The plaque honors Barnes for more than just his move to this area. He became a respected local figure, operating a toll bridge and serving as Justice of the Peace. He lived a remarkable life, filled with family, community involvement, and the challenges of building a life in a new land.

His toll bridge was a vital artery for the area, connecting those on the West and East sides of the Trinity River. The bridge, a symbol of Barnes’s ambition and the growing influence of the area, is gone now, overtaken by the waters of Lake Ray Hubbard. But its legacy lives on.
