Marvelous isn’t it? The Stephaniebrunnen. Right before you stands a masterpiece of Jugendstil art. Built between 1903 and 1905 it’s more than just a fountain.

It’s a story etched in bronze and stone. A story of artistic ambition clashing with civic sensibilities. The Karlsruhe city administration wanted to support young artists. They chose the Stephanplatz for a new fountain. The name honored General Postmaster Heinrich von Stephan. Yet the fountain’s theme was open. Architect Hermann Billing was commissioned. His initial design included a fountain basin under a colonnade. A Quellnymphe a water nymph would grace its center. Young sculptor Hermann Binz was tasked with the bronze figure.

But the naked nymph? The city council balked. Imagine the uproar. Billing and Binz revised their plans. The nymph was moved to the basin’s edge. The colonnade’s canopy was removed. The columns now support a ring-shaped open structure. Water would cascade from faces carved into the columns. These faces were aimed at the nymph. The revised design was approved.

The fountain’s completion in summer 1905 brought surprises. The naked bronze figure and the faces caused a stir. Binz had created caricatures of city council members who’d rejected the initial design. A local poet captured the sentiment in a satirical song. The lyrics mocked the council’s discomfort with the naked figure and the water spouting from the faces.

Between 1999 and 2001 the nearby main post office was transformed into the Postgalerie shopping center. The Stephanplatz was redesigned. The Stephaniebrunnen was restored and reconstructed. Today we see its beauty. Notice the nymph a naked young woman pouring water into the basin. She’s 2.8 meters tall atop a 1.2-meter pedestal. The basin’s diameter is about ten meters. Fourteen columns encircle the basin. Billing and Binz even immortalized themselves among the fourteen faces. Each face is a relief portrait of a prominent Karlsruher personality. Karl Schnetzler the mayor. Viktor Roman and Ludwig Dill painters. Hans Thoma and Wilhelm Trübner renowned painters. Otto Eichrodt a painter portrayed as a faun. Even Karl Ruf a photographer is there. Look closely. You’ll find prominent architects and artists of the time. A local butcher Stadtrat and Kammersänger a chamber singer.

This isn’t just a fountain. It’s a microcosm of Karlsruhe’s history a testament to artistic daring and a playful jab at authority. It’s a delightful detail hidden in plain sight. This is the Stephaniebrunnen a beautiful and unforgettable piece of Karlsruhe.
