Have you ever heard of Stenhouse? It’s a truly unique and interesting place in Edinburgh and the story behind its name is a fascinating one. Stenhouse is a suburb of Edinburgh, built on the border of the Water of Leith. The area boasts a rich history, stretching all the way back to the 16th century. The history of Stenhouse is directly linked to the Stanhope family, who had a powerful presence here for over a century. They owned land and mills near the Water of Leith and Stenhouse was named after them. The name evolved from a number of different forms like Stennop Milne, Stanehope mylnes, Stanehopps, Stenhopmilne – finally settling on Stenhouse Mill in 1773. The oldest building in Stenhouse, a mansion, dates back to the 1620s and was originally built by the Stanhopes. The house was substantially rebuilt by Patrick Ellis, an Edinburgh burgess and merchant. Ellis added to the house and made it more impressive until it was restored in 1964 by Historic Scotland. It was maintained by them until 2009, when it was put under the care of the National Trust for Scotland. The mansion stands as a testament to a time of nobility and great wealth, now preserved for future generations. Stenhouse is truly a place where history meets modern life, with something to capture the imagination of every visitor.
