Hélène Boucher’s memorial stands as a testament to a life lived with daring and passion. Right here in Yermenonville, we honor a woman who soared through the skies and shattered world records. Hélène Boucher, born in Paris in 1908, found solace and inspiration in this tranquil village. Her family’s house in the nearby hamlet of Boigneville served as a retreat during the First World War. It was in Yermenonville that Hélène’s fascination with aviation took flight. She collected photos of aviators and devoured articles about airplanes, dreaming of a future among the clouds.

Hélène Boucher was more than just a pilot; she was a symbol of female empowerment in a male-dominated era. In 1932, she became the fourth woman in France to earn her professional transport pilot’s license. She bought a used De Havilland Gipsy Moth. This act of defiance propelled her into a world that had previously been reserved for men. However, even with her professional license, airlines wouldn’t hire women. Undeterred, Hélène embarked on daring rallies. She entered competitions and even flew a solo raid from Paris to Saigon, showcasing her skill and determination.

Tragically, Hélène’s journey was cut short. On November 30, 1934, during a training flight at Guyancourt, her Caudron Rafale crashed. She was only 26 years old. Hélène’s legacy extends beyond her aviation achievements. She was a vocal feminist, advocating for women’s right to vote alongside Louise Weiss. Her untimely death led to national mourning, a testament to the impact she made on France and the world. Hélène Boucher, the “Sky Bride” as she became known, was laid to rest in Yermenonville, her final resting place a poignant reminder of a life dedicated to pushing boundaries. A monument here, featuring a bronze bust, honors her indomitable spirit. Today, the village also houses a small museum. It is filled with personal artifacts. It contains photos, logbooks, and trophies, offering a glimpse into the extraordinary life of a true pioneer.
