Did the Steen Steensen Blicher Statue always reside here in the Aarhus Botanical Gardens? No. This bronze likeness of the famous Danish author, Steen Steensen Blicher, found its home here in 1928. It replaced a bust by Bauditz at the south end of the park and was later moved to its current location on Peter Holms Vej. Blicher, a priest and author, lived a tumultuous life marked by alcoholism and an untimely death. The Steen Steensen Blicher Statue captures him in perpetuity, a silent observer of the tranquil gardens. He’s best known for the novel “Præsten i Vejlby” (The Rector of Veilbye), which holds the distinction of being Denmark’s first detective novel. Many of his stories delve into themes of depression and tragedy. These themes may offer a glimpse into the author’s own struggles. The statue’s creator, Just Nielsen Sondrup, honed his craft at the Aalborg Technical School before continuing his studies in Copenhagen. He studied under the renowned Vilhelm Bissen at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts from 1900 to 1905. Now, as you admire the Steen Steensen Blicher Statue, consider the man it represents. A writer who, despite his personal demons, crafted enduring tales that continue to resonate with readers today.
