How many individuals do you know who have had roads and statues dedicated to them? This bronze Statue of Lim Lean Teng commemorates a remarkable man. Lim Lean Teng was not just a successful businessman. He was a philanthropist who significantly impacted education in Penang.
Lim Lean Teng was born in China in 1870. He migrated to Penang and then to British Malaya. He became a wealthy millionaire through his business ventures in Penang. He owned a bungalow and several properties.
But his wealth wasn’t his defining characteristic. Lim Lean Teng used his fortune to improve his community. The Teochew Association of Penang aimed to establish SJK(C) Han Chiang in 1919. They lacked the funds to do so. Lim Lean Teng stepped in and donated the necessary money. The school opened on Chulia Street.
Lim Lean Teng continued his support for education. In 1936 he donated the Sungai Petani clock tower commemorating King George V’s Silver Jubilee. In 1950 he established Han Chiang High School also on Chulia Street. The school quickly became overcrowded. Lim Lean Teng donated 33 acres of land on Jalan Datuk Keramat for a new school. He continuously supported both Han Chiang schools.
Lim Lean Teng passed away in 1963 at the age of 93. The Han Chiang School and many others mourned his death. People remembered his contributions to Chinese education in Malaysia.
In 1958, Lim Lean Teng received a special honor. A bronze statue was erected in front of Han Chiang High School. Tunku Abdul Rahman, the first Prime Minister of Malaya, unveiled it. Jalan Lim Lean Teng, also known as Lim Lean Teng Road, was dedicated to him after his death. The road is where Han Chiang High School is located.
Lim Lean Teng was also honored with the Companion of the Order of the Defender of the Realm in 1958. This award recognized his service to the country.
Interestingly, Lim Lean Teng also commissioned a mansion in 1925. He wanted something unique to distinguish it from other mansions on Northam Road. He added a dome with a cupola inspired by the HSBC Building.
