Hidden within Beirut’s vibrant Mar Mikhael district, Station Beirut isn’t just a theatre. It’s a resurrected ghost of Lebanon’s railway past. The building itself echoes with the history of the old Beirut train station. It began its life in 1895, a grand testament to French architectural design with soaring 5-meter ceilings and a clock by the renowned Paul Garnier. Imagine the hustle and bustle as trains arrived from Damascus along the cogwheel track, or later, along the coastal NBT line connecting Naqoura, Beirut, and Tripoli. Station Beirut witnessed the golden age of rail travel, a time when the journey to Riyaq took nine hours, a stark contrast to today’s travel. The station clock, still miraculously keeping time, can run for 16 days on a single crank. Station Beirut served passengers until the Lebanese Civil War forced its closure in 1975. The years that followed saw the station fall into disrepair, a forgotten relic of a bygone era. Then, in the 21st century, a spark of life was rekindled. Cultural events and fundraisers echoed through the abandoned halls, breathing new life into the space. In 2014, a trendy outdoor bar emerged, complete with a repurposed steam locomotive serving as a DJ booth. Many visitors, unaware of its rich history, simply enjoyed the industrial-style décor. Tragedy struck again in 2020 when the Beirut explosion damaged the station’s roof, a cruel blow to this resilient landmark. Hope remains, however, with UNESCO and Italy partnering in 2023 to fund its restoration. Station Beirut stands as a testament to Lebanon’s enduring spirit, a phoenix rising from the ashes, ready to embrace a new chapter in its vibrant story.
