“A Maori village thrived here” That’s what the old maps tell us. Welcome to Stanley Bay or rather Stanley Point. It’s a name change story in itself. This beautiful bay near Devonport was once known as Stanley Bay. Then in 2007 it officially became Stanley Point.

The name change might seem insignificant. However it reflects a larger story. A story about how places evolve. How names change. How communities shift. Captain Owen Stanley surveyed the Waitemata Harbour in 1841. He gave his name to this picturesque spot. The area’s history runs much deeper than this. Stanley Bay was originally called Brick Bay. A brickworks operated there from 1844 to the 1850s. This shows how early industry shaped this land.

Later the Calliope Dock was built. This led to significant development. During the construction in the 1880s Maori labourers lived here. They built a village at Stanley Bay. It served as a temporary home for them. They worked tirelessly on this large construction project. They created a small community. This demonstrates the strong historical link between Maori and this land. The Bay’s development brought change. However it retained a deep sense of community.

The area’s transformation continued. A ferry service started in 1900. Stanley Bay School opened in 1909. The Stanley Bay Improvement Association formed in the 1920s. They reclaimed land to create Stanley Bay Park. Today this lovely spot still serves as a vibrant community hub. It’s a testament to its people’s enduring spirit.

Stanley Point today is a residential suburb. It has a population of almost 2000. The 2023 census shows a diverse community. Many people hold university degrees. The median income is relatively high. This reveals a prosperous and well-educated population. They continue to shape the character of Stanley Point. The Bay’s history continues to echo. It’s a tale of transformation. It’s a story of both industrial growth and community spirit. It shows how this community has constantly evolved. From a Maori village to a thriving suburb. Stanley Point’s history is a fascinating journey. It’s a journey full of change. It is a testament to the resilience of its people.
