Why is that towering bronze sculpture called “Standing Wave”? Here at the Edmonds Station, beside the railway tracks, stands Gerry Tsutakawa’s magnificent creation. The Standing Wave sculpture. It has finally found its home. It’s a striking piece, resembling a totem pole, evoking the constant motion of Puget Sound. The Standing Wave sculpture almost wasn’t here. Originally commissioned in 2002 for the new Sound Transit platform, its journey has been a long one. Sound Transit partnered with the Edmonds Arts Commission to bring Tsutakawa’s vision to life. Initially, a smaller version was planned. However, the committee, recognizing the potential for a true landmark, decided to double the budget through private fundraising. This allowed for the creation of the impressive 15-foot sculpture we see today. Due to construction delays at the platform, the Standing Wave sculpture found a temporary home in 2004. It resided at the SR 104 Mini Park, near the ferry holding lanes, for seven years. Finally, in 2011, the Standing Wave sculpture was installed here at its permanent location. It’s bolted to the concrete, partially filled with sand, and stands tall, greeting commuters arriving from Kingston. It truly is a symbol of the community’s dedication to art. The sculpture wouldn’t exist without a unique partnership. Sound Transit’s Start Program, the Arts Commission, and numerous private donors all contributed. Tsutakawa’s influence extends beyond the Standing Wave. He also designed four panels for the railing at the south end of the platform. These smaller works complement the imposing presence of the Standing Wave sculpture. So, next time you pass through Edmonds Station, take a moment to appreciate the Standing Wave. It represents not just artistic vision, but also community effort and the enduring power of public art.
