Stancombe Cottage, originally known as Baverstock Cottage, began its life in the 1870s on Stancombe Road. Imagine this small, three-roomed dwelling growing over time, reflecting the changing needs of its occupants. This expansion is a common tale for early rural homesteads, and Stancombe Cottage is no exception. The cottage’s life on Stancombe Road intertwined with the local history. It sat near the Fo Guang Shan Buddhist temple, a much later addition to the landscape. In 2011, the cottage embarked on a new chapter. The Buddhist Trust, having no further use for the historic building, facilitated its relocation. The Howick Local Board, recognizing the cottage’s heritage value, stepped in to restore it for community use. Now nestled in Murphy’s Bush Scenic Reserve, Stancombe Cottage offers approximately 180 square meters of space. It houses two meeting rooms, two offices, a dining/staff room, a small kitchen, and a bathroom. The cottage isn’t just a preserved relic of the past. It serves as a vibrant community hub. Local groups, dedicated to positive community outcomes, lease the space, ensuring the cottage continues to play a vital role in the area.
