From a desolate execution ground to a vibrant green oasis, the story of Mainz’s Stadtpark is one of remarkable transformation. The Stadtpark, nestled between the old town and the upper town, occupies land with a layered past. Imagine this very spot in 1793. The opulent Favorite Palace, once a symbol of electoral power, lies in ruins after the Siege of Mainz. Stones from the palace are carted off, repurposed for new constructions under French occupation. The air is heavy with the memory of 1803 when the infamous outlaw Schinderhannes and his gang met their fate here, guillotined on this very ground. The Stadtpark, as we know it, began to emerge from this somber history between 1819 and 1825. Landscape architect Peter Wolf, commissioned by the city, envisioned an English-style landscape park, a stark contrast to the site’s grim past. His design embraced the natural contours of the land, softening the edges of its harsh history. While some of Wolf’s original vision was lost to railway expansion and the construction of a gasworks, the spirit of his design endured. The Siesmayer brothers, renowned for their work on Frankfurt’s Palmengarten, further refined the Stadtpark in 1888, shaping it into the tranquil haven we see today. Mainz celebrated its 2000th anniversary in 1962 by adding new features to the Stadtpark. Flower houses, a birdhouse, and a peaceful reading yard invited visitors to linger and enjoy the park’s beauty. Baroque elements salvaged from the ruins of the Favorite Palace, including a statue of Hercules and the torso of the river god Rhenus, were reinstated, creating a tangible link to the past. The Stadtpark now boasts sprawling lawns shaded by mature trees. Fountains add a touch of elegance. Winding pathways invite leisurely strolls. A copy of the Father Rhine statue stands watch, a reminder of the city’s connection to the river. Within the Stadtpark lies a hidden gem: the rose garden. Designed in 1925 by August Waltenberg to commemorate the Rhineland’s millennium, this fragrant oasis spans 9,500 square meters and boasts approximately 7,500 roses. It’s a fitting symbol of the park’s rebirth, transforming a place of execution into one of beauty and celebration. Today, the Stadtpark hosts vibrant events, including the Mainz Wine Market and Sparkling Wine Festival. The annual Artists’ Market and Book Fair further enrich the park’s cultural tapestry. And those trees planted in a circular pattern within the rose garden? They stand as a solemn reminder of those executed here in 1803, ensuring that the Stadtpark never forgets its past even as it embraces its future. Designated a protected monument in 2006, the Stadtpark stands as a testament to Mainz’s resilience, a place where history, nature, and community converge.
