A church with a history as rich as the Weser River itself, the Stadtkirche Vegesack stands proudly before you. Before it was a place of worship, Vegesack was a bustling harbor. Ships from all over the world came to its shores. In the late 1600s, Dutch engineers deepened the river, making it even easier for ships to navigate. Vegesack prospered, and soon a growing community of 1,400 people sought their own church.

The Stadtkirche Vegesack was built in 1821, its classical style modeled after the St. Pauli Church in Bremer Neustadt. The first cornerstone was laid in 1819. It even had an optical telegraph tower built between 1847 and 1851. This unique feature stands as a testament to the early days of communication in Vegesack.

The church wasn’t always as big as it is now. The community grew quickly and in 1832 the church was expanded by adding two extra rows of windows. Today, the walls house two magnificent paintings. One depicts the crucifixion of Christ. Inspired by Rubens, it was created by Henriette Amy Kuerpenning sometime around 1825. The second, painted in 1823, is an interpretation of “The Descent from the Cross” by Raphael.

In recent years, the Stadtkirche Vegesack has been modernized, with a new community center called “Oberdeck” added to the attic. But the heart of the church, a testament to the resilience and spirit of the Vegesack community, remains the same. The church is a reminder of the people who came before you, worked hard, and built a community on the banks of the Weser.
