Why was this school named after a queen? We are standing in front of the Städtisches Theodolinden-Gymnasium. It’s a grand name, isn’t it? Evoking royalty and history. The school earned this name in 1960. It honors Theodolinde, a Bavarian duchess who became the Queen of the Lombards. The decision came as a surprise to many students and teachers. They wondered why delve so far back into history for a name? Perhaps to avoid any political connotations, unlike some other schools at the time. Whatever the reason, the Städtisches Theodolinden-Gymnasium now carries her name. Interestingly, it wasn’t met with much fanfare. Theodolinde wasn’t a household name. Even today, the school receives mail addressed to “Theodor-Linden-Gymnasium” or even “Theodor-Lingen-Gymnasium”. Perhaps the school’s common abbreviations, TRG and later TLG, further overshadowed the queen’s legacy.
