The building suffered significant damage during World War II. Bombing raids destroyed much of the structure. Repairs were slow and painstaking. A full renovation wasn’t completed until 1957 the school’s 50th anniversary. By then it housed not only elementary school classes but also 60 vocational school classes.

The school gradually transitioned from a Volksschule (grades 1-8) to a Grundschule (grades 1-4). The vocational school moved out in 1992.
