Picture this a vibrant blue track stretching before you. This isn’t just any track. This is the heart of Stade Sébastien-Charléty. This stadium is the second largest in Paris. It sits proudly in the 13th arrondissement.
Stade Sébastien-Charléty has a rich history. It began in 1939. A university rector wanted a training center. It was originally for the Paris Université Club. The original stadium was demolished in 1989. It was rebuilt between 1991 and 1994. The architects Henri and Bruno Goudin transformed it. It became a multipurpose facility. They created an athletics track. There are also football and rugby pitches. A multifunctional hall was added. Several gyms tennis and squash courts were also included.
The stadium is near the French Athletics Federation. It’s also near the French National Olympic and Sports Committee. This makes it a hub for athletics. Before the 2019 Diamond League several renovations occurred. A new Mondo Sportflex Super X 720 track was installed. This improved the facilities. This was in preparation for the European Athletics Championships in 2020.
The Mondo track is impressive. It covers 11000 square meters. It meets IAAF World Athletics performance criteria. It offers shock absorption vertical deformation and energy return. The rubber upper layer is elastic and resistant. The hexagonal air cell backing provides cushioning. It also stores and returns energy.
The track is environmentally friendly. A photovoltaic plant reduces carbon dioxide production. The flooring contains recycled and renewable materials. The 2020 schedule was ambitious. The COVID-19 pandemic caused postponements and cancellations. The Diamond League and the European Athletics Championships were affected.
Despite the pandemic the 2019 Meeting de Paris was a success. Athletes inaugurated the new track. Yulimar Rojas a Venezuelan triple jump champion loved it. She achieved a 15.05m jump. Karsten Warholm a Norwegian 400m hurdler also praised the track. He set a new European record.
Will Claye an American triple jump champion jumped 18.06m. Pascal Martinot-Lagarde finished 5th in the 110m hurdles. He achieved his best time of the season. The athletes’ positive feedback confirmed the quality of the track.
The 2021 Diamond League saw more impressive results. Francine Niyonsaba excelled in the 3000m. Benjamin Kigen did well in the 3000m steeplechase. Stade Sébastien-Charléty will continue to host the Diamond League. In June 2023 elite athletes will compete on the Mondo track. This will be another prestigious event.
