“Ever heard of a school branch with roots stretching back to mangrove swamps?” That’s the story of St. Xavier Branch Primary School.

Let’s step back in time together right here at St. Xavier Branch Primary School. This school is more than just classrooms and books. It is a place with a story that began unexpectedly.

St. Xavier Branch Primary School has links to the esteemed St. Xavier’s Institution. The institution started in 1852. But its true beginnings reach further into Penang’s past.

Picture this: It’s 1786. Reverend Father Domino Arnaldo Antonio-Garnault arrives from Kedah. He seeks permission from Captain Light to build a church. Light agrees. Garnault then establishes a Malay language school. This humble school was in an attap shed. It stood in what was then a mangrove swamp. This area eventually became Church Street.

Fast forward to 1825. Monsignor Jean-Baptiste Boucho moves the school. He relocates it from the church compound to a brick house. He transforms it into an English-medium school for boys. It was renamed the Catholic Free School.

In 1906, something special happened. The parish priest of Pulau Tikus had built a village school. People called it Noah’s Ark. This building was handed over to the Christian Brothers. It became a branch of St. Xavier’s School. That is how St. Xavier Branch Primary School began.

After World War II, St. Xavier’s Institution faced immense challenges. The original building was destroyed in 1941. The Allied nations bombed the school. It had been used as the naval headquarters for the Imperial Army of Japan. Schooling was suspended. When it resumed, pupils studied in attap huts on the school field.

After the war, St. Xavier’s Institution was affiliated with two primary schools. Sekolah Rendah Kebangsaan St. Xavier’s is in Air Itam. St. Xavier’s Branch Primary School, also known as Sekolah Rendah Kebangsaan St. Xavier’s Cawangan, is here in Pulau Tikus.

Graduates from both primary schools often continue their education at St. Xavier’s Institution.

Today, St. Xavier Branch Primary School continues the mission. It provides education rooted in history. It prepares students for the future. It all started from a simple school in a mangrove swamp. Its story continues to evolve. The journey continues with each passing year. St. Xavier Branch Primary School stands as a testament. It honors dedication, resilience, and the enduring power of education.
