Bishop Willehad a pivotal figure in Bremen’s history stands before you. His legacy echoes through the very stones of this city. St Willehad’s story is one of unwavering faith tireless missionary work and enduring impact on the region.

Born in Northumbria around 745 Willehad received a prestigious education in York. He was a friend of the renowned Alcuin a scholar of significant influence. Ordained a priest Willehad answered a higher calling. He embarked on a mission to Frisia a region steeped in paganism. He preached in Dokkum Overijssel and Utrecht. However fierce opposition from violent pagans forced him to flee.

Undeterred Charlemagne the powerful Frankish emperor commissioned Willehad. He tasked him with evangelizing the Saxons. This mission proved treacherous. The Saxon king Widukind rebelled against Charlemagne’s rule. Willehad was forced to escape to Frisia his life endangered. Many of his companions were killed their churches destroyed.

Seeking solace and to regroup Willehad journeyed to Rome. He met Pope Adrian I reporting on his challenging work. He then found refuge at the Abbey of Echternach in Luxembourg. There he diligently copied books including the Epistles of St Paul. He also spent time rebuilding his missionary team.

After Charlemagne’s successful conquest of the Saxons Willehad returned. He preached near the Elbe and Weser Rivers. In 787 he was consecrated bishop his diocese encompassing Saxony and Frisia near the Weser’s mouth. He established his see in Bremen a city first documented in 782. He built the magnificent Bremen Cathedral a testament to his dedication. Anschar later praised its beauty. The cathedral dedicated in 789 to St Peter stands as a symbol of Willehad’s accomplishments. He also erected a smaller church at Blexen.

Willehad’s life tragically ended in Blexen on November 8 789. He succumbed to a fever. He was buried in the cathedral he himself had consecrated. His successor St Willericus later moved his remains to a chapel within the church. Sadly during the Reformation Willehad’s relics were lost. His feast day though initially neglected was reinstated in 1901 in certain dioceses. St Willehad’s life was documented by a Bremen cleric and his miracles by St Ansgar. His story inspires and compels us. He left an indelible mark on Bremen and beyond. His dedication and perseverance created a lasting legacy of faith. Let us reflect on the impact of this remarkable man.
