The new St Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church stands proud in Clyde North, a vibrant suburb of Melbourne. It wasn’t always this way. The St Thomas the Apostle parish began in 2012. A Foundation Mass marked the start of the parish back in 2012. The parish lacked a proper church though, so masses were held in classrooms at St Peter’s College in Cranbourne since it was founded. The community grew. The parish wanted a permanent home. It took over a decade for the new building to be realized. Their persistent vision has been rewarded. The church, a $6 million project, was finally dedicated and blessed in April of 2023. The opening ceremony saw the participation of members of the parish and Bunurong Elders. The Bishop of Sale, Gregory Bennet, as well as the Archbishop of Adelaide, Patrick O’Regan, joined the celebrations. The community has grown quickly; there are now about 2,000 families registered in the parish. The new church has a seating capacity of over 450 with additional space for about 200 more. The parish priest, Fr Denis O’Bryan, is thrilled. He is excited about the possibilities that the new space opens up, from meetings and workshops to prayer groups. He is proud to welcome the students of St Thomas Primary School and St Peter’s College, who used to host masses while the parish was under construction. St Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church is a beacon of faith, welcoming the community with open arms. This is a place where people can come together to celebrate their faith and find solace.
