“Did you know Father Bill Travers a beloved priest is partly responsible for this church’s name?” I ask. This is St Thomas-Morus-Kirche in Bonn. Its story is interwoven with the life of a remarkable man.

St Thomas-Morus-Kirche isn’t just a building. It’s a testament to faith community and resilience. Established in 1952 as part of the American Embassy it served a diverse international community. Initially it was named St Thomas More Parish by Father Bill Travers.

Father Travers served this community for seventeen years. He wasn’t just a priest. He was a medic a scorer for high school teams a friend and counselor. He even established outreach programs in Russia Uganda and Kentucky. His dedication earned him the honor of having a street near the church named after him Father-Bill-Strasse.

The church initially resided in the Stimson Memorial Chapel. In 2003 it found its current home in the Heilig-Kreuz Kirche. This transition reflects the church’s evolving nature mirroring the changing international community it serves. Today parishioners represent over 27 nations.

Many of these families are connected to the UN OCCAR the American military or international companies like DHL. Others are students from universities in Bonn and Cologne. The St Thomas-Morus-Kirche provides religious education for children. This is especially significant as international schools in Bonn don’t offer this. The church is therefore a vital hub for English-speaking Catholic families and individuals.

Sunday Mass regularly draws around 140 people including a significant number of children. It shows the enduring power of faith and community in a globalized world. This place is more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a living testament to Father Bill’s legacy a vibrant international community and the enduring spirit of faith.
