Glendale Avenue is where our story begins. Here stands St Thomas More Catholic School. It is more than just a school. It is a place of history and transformation.
St Thomas More Catholic School started in 1952. It began at Holcombe Road Tottenham. This was fourteen years after building work first started. Today St Thomas More is the only Catholic secondary school in Haringey.
The school has seen big improvements. Martin Tissot became executive headteacher in 2010. He is also headteacher at St George’s school in Maida Vale. In 2013 the school achieved great results. Ninety-one percent of pupils got 5 A-Cs in GCSEs. This included English and Maths. St Thomas More became the “most improved school in the country”. It gained academy status in March 2013. Ofsted rated it as outstanding in June 2013.
New facilities have been added to St Thomas More. There is now a Duke of Edinburgh Award training centre. Students enjoy a dance studio and music studios. Drama studios and a multi gym have also been added. A floodlit astroturf pitch is available.
Many notable people attended St Thomas More Catholic School. Samantha Fox became a singer and glamour model. Tony Jarrett excelled as a hurdler. Shaun Leane became a renowned jeweller. Emma Ania shone as an athlete. Lawrence Vigouroux pursued a career as a footballer. Tobi Adeyemo is now a professional footballer for Watford F.C..
St Thomas More encourages former students to stay connected. The school has a “Forever More” community. Alumni can inspire current students. They can share their experiences and offer guidance. Alumni can give careers talks. They can provide work experience or mentoring. The school also runs a Women’s Leadership Project.
