The scent of pinewood. Can you smell it? It hangs heavy in the air within St.-Thomas-Kirche. This isn’t an accident. The church is practically built of it. Its wooden barrel vault embraces you as you step inside St.-Thomas-Kirche. This church has a story to tell, a story of rebirth and resilience. St.-Thomas-Kirche is Lübeck’s first post-World War II church. A phoenix rising from the ashes, symbolizing a new beginning. The year was 1950. The scars of war were still fresh. Yet, amidst the rubble and uncertainty, a foundation stone was laid. Just one year later, on Pentecost 1951, the St.-Thomas-Kirche opened its doors. Bishop Johannes Pautke consecrated the building. The rapid construction is a testament to the community’s determination. Architect Gerhard Langmaack envisioned a space of peace. He chose simple yet powerful elements. The warm wood, the massive brick altar under a wooden canopy, held aloft by four pillars. Did you notice the round stained-glass window? It’s more than just a decorative element. Crafted by Lübeck’s Berkentien glassworks, based on Hilde Ferber’s design, it depicts scenes from the life of the Apostle Thomas. It’s a story of doubt and faith. Look closely. You’ll see the resurrected Christ reaching out to Thomas. “Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe.” These powerful words from John 20:27 resonate throughout St.-Thomas-Kirche, a message of hope for a city rebuilding itself. Even the original Kemper organ, later replaced in 1982 by a Kleuker organ, played its part in this story of renewal. The music filled the space, offering solace and inspiration. St.-Thomas-Kirche remains a vital part of the community to this day. A symbol of hope and faith, it stands as a testament to the power of the human spirit to overcome adversity.
