In 1844, St Thomas’ Church emerged as an independent Anglican church. Originally located in Edinburgh’s city center, it relocated in 1938 to the expanding western edges of the city, specifically Corstorphine. St Thomas’ has a rich history, shaped by a series of evangelical clergy. Since 1945, the church has seen leadership from Revd George Duncan to Revd David McCarthy, who began his tenure in 2014. Under Revd Dennis Lennon, St Thomas’ played a pivotal role in two significant church planting initiatives. In 1985, about seventy members helped revitalize St Paul’s and St George’s in Edinburgh’s city center. Three years later, another group established Emmanuel Church in Clermiston. These acts of generosity led St Thomas’ to join the Scottish Episcopal Church in 1991. Interestingly, it transitioned from a gathered congregation to a more localized church, primarily serving the Corstorphine community and west Edinburgh. Then, a significant shift occurred in 2018/19. After much prayer and with widespread support from the Anglican Communion, St Thomas’ Church regained its independent status. The church continues to be inspired by Jesus and his apostles, proclaiming the kingdom of God with boldness.
