February 21st, 1915. A crisp summer day in Melbourne. Archbishop Carr lays the foundation stone. The grand St Thomas Aquinas’ Church begins its journey. St Thomas Aquinas’ Church wasn’t always the imposing structure we see today. It began as a humble “chapel-of-ease.” It served the Catholic domestic staff employed in the grand mansions along St Kilda Road and South Yarra Hill. Imagine these hardworking individuals, mostly Irish Catholics, grateful for a nearby place to worship. Walking to St Joseph’s or a city church would have taken too much time, especially on Sunday mornings when their duties called. St Thomas Aquinas’ Church became their spiritual haven. The church stands as a testament to their faith. Zoe Ali’s photographic series, “A New Jerusalem,” captured the essence of St Thomas Aquinas’ Church. The series, exhibited at the City Gallery, focused on places of worship within Melbourne. Ali’s photographs highlighted the unique features of each building. They captured the spirit and distinctive qualities, as seen by a passerby. Though devoid of people, the photographs hint at the human activity within these sacred spaces. St Thomas Aquinas’ Church is more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a symbol of community, faith, and the rich history of South Yarra.
