In 1922, a dream began to blossom in Essendon. The burgeoning Catholic community yearned for a place of worship, a spiritual haven. That dream took shape as St Therese’s Church. The cornerstone was laid, a promise etched in stone. However, the parish was initially named after St. Teresa of Avila. But fate, it seemed, had other plans. In a twist of events, St. Thérèse of Lisieux, the “Little Flower,” was beatified in 1925. Touched by her story, the parish shifted its allegiance to St. Thérèse. The church we see today, completed in 1935, stands as a testament to her enduring legacy. The Latin inscription on the foundation stone whispers of this history. It speaks of Archbishop Daniel Mannix’s blessing and Father Peter O’Brien’s guidance. St Therese’s Church isn’t just bricks and mortar. It’s woven into the fabric of the community.
