Gazing upon this weathered stone frame, you’ll see the names of 70 men from this parish who made the ultimate sacrifice. This is St Stephen’s Church War Memorial, a poignant testament to the lives lost in the Great War. This memorial stands proudly at St Stephen’s Church, a Church of England parish church, situated on Westbourne Park Road in Westbourne Park, a district in the City of Westminster.
It is a two-part memorial with two dark slate tablets. The names are inscribed in columns on each tablet. You may notice an inscription at the top of the frame: “To the Glory of God and in Memory of the Men of This Parish Who Gave/ Their Lives for King and Country in the Great War 1914 – 1918”. Each tablet also bears the inscription: “Officers/ (Names)/ Non-Commissioned Officers and Men/ (Names)”. These names echo with the stories of those who put their lives on the line for their country.
St Stephen’s Church War Memorial stands as a silent sentinel, a reminder of the immeasurable cost of conflict. It is a place of remembrance and respect, where we can pause to honor those who gave their lives.
