St Stephen, Purfleet. A church born from a chapel, rising from the ashes of a grand house. It stands as a testament to change, a symbol of Purfleet’s evolving identity. The original chapel, a small structure nestled in the Dipping, a former chalk quarry, was built around 1791 by Samuel Whitbread. This brewery magnate, known for his philanthropy and innovation, intended the chapel for his workers. He required their attendance, shaping the spiritual life of this small industrial community. Interestingly, the chapel wasn’t initially Anglican. It served various nonconformist groups, reflecting a diverse religious landscape. By the 1820s, the chapel began to be used for Anglican services, eventually coming under the full charge of the vicar of West Thurrock by 1863. The Whitbreads retained ownership, maintaining the building and its connection to the community. This dual use speaks to the shifting religious dynamics of Purfleet. With the sale of the Whitbread estate in 1920, the chapel closed its doors. However, the story of St Stephen doesn’t end there. The vicar of St. Clement’s, J. W. Hayes, recognized the need for a new church in Purfleet. He purchased the old chapel along with Purfleet House, Whitbread’s former residence. This marked a turning point. The grand 26-room mansion, once a symbol of Purfleet’s industrial prosperity, was partly demolished. Some of its stones were then used to construct the present St Stephen’s Church in 1923. The church became a chapel of ease to St. Clement’s, continuing the Anglican presence in the area. St Stephen, Purfleet. It’s more than just a building. It’s a physical embodiment of Purfleet’s transformation from a small industrial village to a modern community. Its story echoes the changing religious and social fabric of the area, a blend of nonconformist origins, Anglican adoption, and the enduring legacy of the Whitbread family.
