Around 1734 a magnificent church rose from the Essex earth. This is St Stephen Ingrave a testament to faith and the Petre family’s devotion. St Stephen Ingrave replaced older churches in Ingrave and West Horndon. Lord Petre the eighth commissioned its construction. He was known for his beautiful gardens and introducing new plants to England. Some parts of the older churches found new homes within St Stephen Ingrave. The font came from the old Ingrave church. Brasses from West Horndon now adorn the new structure. The church’s location was carefully chosen. It sits midway between the sites of the demolished churches. St Stephen Ingrave was more than just a place of worship. It was a hub for the community. White’s Directory of 1848 mentions three schools. One was run by the rector. Two catered to Catholic children under Lord and Lady Petre’s patronage. John Kinder was the Catholic schoolmaster. Rose Smith was the schoolmistress. The church served a growing population. Ingrave boasted 530 people in 1841. Herongate and East Horndon had a similar number. Local businesses thrived. Residents could buy food and necessities within the villages. Herongate had grocers and bakers. Ingrave had bakers a butcher and Isaiah Steel ran the post office. Craftsmen plied their trades. Four shoemakers two blacksmiths a saddler and a wheelwright lived in the area. The Boardman brothers were carpenters. Ann Boardman was a shopkeeper. Public houses served the community. The Old Boar’s Head the Green Man and the Cricketers offered refreshment. St Stephen Ingrave stands as a lasting legacy.
