Have you ever felt the weight of history pressing down? Standing before St Stephan in Mainz you can almost feel it. This isn’t just a church it’s a living testament to centuries of faith resilience and art.

St Stephan in Mainz is more than a pretty building. It’s a Gothic hall church. Construction began around 1267 and finished in 1340. It’s the oldest Gothic hall church in the Upper Rhine region. Archbishop Willigis originally commissioned the church in 990. He envisioned it as a place of prayer for the entire Empire.

Interestingly enough the current building kept the original floor plan. Willigis himself was buried here in 1011. His resting place is sadly lost to time. It’s believed to be somewhere within the collegiate area. The church suffered greatly over the centuries. A powder magazine explosion in 1857 damaged its Baroque facade. World War II bombing inflicted even more damage. The cloister was heavily damaged but rebuilt between 1968 and 1971. The nave and choir arches were destroyed. They were replaced with a simple wooden ceiling.

But St Stephan endured. It holds remarkable treasures. A 13th century altar mensa survived. So did a huge tabernacle from around 1500. The most striking feature however is its stained glass. Marc Chagall a Belarusian Jewish artist created nine magnificent windows between 1978 and 1985. These windows are unique in Germany. They depict scenes from the Old Testament. Chagall’s work was a powerful statement of Jewish-German reconciliation. He created them despite fleeing France during the Nazi occupation. He worked on the project until he was 97 years old.

The luminous blue of Chagall’s windows fills the church with a unique light. It’s a truly awe-inspiring sight. This place is more than just stone and glass. It’s a story of faith survival and artistic brilliance. It is a story of St Stephan in Mainz.
