Standing before St. Raphael’s Church, its warm-coloured Bath stone ashlar gleaming in the sunlight, you feel a connection to the past. This magnificent church, completed in 1848, is a testament to the generosity and vision of Alexander Raphael, a Catholic Armenian who came from India. What makes this church so unique is its history as a family chapel. Alexander Raphael built it for himself and his family, naming it after Saint Raphael. After his death, his nephew, Edward, opened the chapel to the public. But Alexander Raphael wasn’t just a wealthy man, he was a politician and philanthropist. In fact, he was the first Catholic Sheriff of London after the passing of the Catholic Emancipation Act in 1829! The church is not just a beautiful building, it’s also a symbol of tolerance and religious freedom. St. Raphael’s Church is a monument to both family and faith. It stands proudly on Portsmouth Road, overlooking the Thames and the bustling town of Kingston Upon Thames.
