Hidden within Bonn lies the St. Quirinus-Kirche. It stands as a testament to a rich history, intertwined with a Roman martyr and a resilient community. The St. Quirinus-Kirche isn’t just a building. It’s a story echoing through centuries. Let’s journey back to Dottendorf’s origins. This charming village emerged during the Carolingian era. A written record from 804 AD mentions it as part of a donation to the St. Cassius and St. Florentius monastery. The parish’s history, deeply connected to Dottendorf’s, stretches back over 800 years, likely established after 1190. Originally dedicated to St. Stephen, the church transitioned to St. Quirinus as its patron saint. Inside the St. Quirinus-Kirche rests a sacred relic, the head of St. Balbina, daughter of St. Quirinus. The story of St. Quirinus himself is shrouded in legend. He was a Roman tribune, baptized by Pope Alexander I along with his daughter. Quirinus met a martyr’s fate around 130 AD under Hadrian’s rule, his final resting place the Praetextus catacomb in Rome. Interestingly, the name Quirinus derives from an epithet of the god Mars. It was later used for the deified founder of Rome, Romulus. Dottendorf’s history is also linked to the now-gone Burg Dottendorf, a castle upon whose grounds the first parish church stood in the 12th century. This original structure met an unfortunate end in 1895, demolished for reasons lost to time. The Napoleonic occupation of the Rhineland in 1804 brought upheaval. The French authorities restructured religious life. St. Quirinus parish was merged with the larger St. Nikolaus parish in Kessenich. This sparked decades of protest from Dottendorf’s residents. They fought to regain their parish’s independence. In 1860, a dedicated group formed a society. Their goal was to build a new church. Their efforts bore fruit. On September 13, 1870, the Archbishop of Cologne restored St. Quirinus to its former independence. Construction began in 1888. The foundation stone was laid. On July 23, 1891, the new St. Quirinus-Kirche was consecrated by Auxiliary Bishop Dr. Anton Fischer. He would later become Cardinal and Archbishop of Cologne. The St. Quirinus-Kirche is more than bricks and mortar. It embodies the unwavering faith and community spirit of Dottendorf.
