In 1953, a humble dream took root in Heidelberg West. This dream blossomed into St Pius X Catholic Church. The initial structures were simple quonset huts, purchased from the Housing Commission. These unassuming beginnings, under the leadership of Father George Maher, marked the birth of a vibrant community. St Pius X Catholic Church wasn’t always St Pius X. It was initially named Blessed Pius X. The name changed after Pius’s canonization in May 1954. The community rallied together, fundraising tirelessly through events like housie, boxing displays, and Irish dancing. By early 1955, a new six-classroom school block neared completion. Later that year, Father Maher celebrated the first Mass in the new combined Church/Hall, separated by folding doors for flexible use. Education was a cornerstone of the growing parish. Father Maher invited the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart to establish a school. In February 1954, Sisters Gangolfa and Michael began teaching, traveling daily by taxi from Balwyn. The school quickly expanded, with six sisters in 1955 and a student population of 500. Archbishop Justin Simmonds officially opened the school that same year. By 1957, with the student body nearing 900, four more sisters joined the dedicated staff, followed by more in 1958 and lay teachers like the esteemed Mrs. Doreen Bell. A convent was built across Waterdale Road in 1958, housing the sisters and solidifying their presence within the parish community. They continued their educational work until 1985, transitioning to pastoral care roles. The 1956 Olympic Games brought an influx of Catholic athletes and officials to the church, boosting Mass attendance. Following the Games, the Olympic Village was converted into public housing, further increasing the local population and the school’s enrollment to over 1,000 by 1958. St Pius X Catholic Church has witnessed a rich tapestry of community groups throughout the years. From the Credit Society and Silver Circle to the YCW, CYMS, and various spiritual organizations, these groups have contributed to the social and spiritual fabric of the parish. The St. Vincent de Paul Conference, established at the parish’s inception, has remained a steadfast beacon of support for those in need. The Exodus Community, formed in 1998, further strengthens the parish’s outreach and community building efforts, particularly in the Olympic Village area. Over the decades, Heidelberg West and St Pius X Catholic Church have transformed. Demographics have shifted, and the landscape has evolved, with modern dwellings replacing some of the original 1956 Olympic Village houses. While the church building maintains its original charm, the parish community has seen a decline in numbers. Yet, the core purpose of St Pius X Catholic Church remains: to embody Christ’s presence in Heidelberg West, nurture faith through the Eucharist, and inspire lives of generosity, patience, honesty, and prayer.
