Founded in 1934, St Philip’s School stands as a testament to enduring educational values. It began with only four boys. Mr. Richard Tibbits even drove them to school each day.
St Philip’s School started at 6 Wetherby Place. This remains its location today in the heart of Kensington. The school’s creation answered Father John Talbot’s call. He wanted a school for local Catholic families’ sons.
But then came World War II. The school temporarily relocated to Warwickshire due to the war. An explosion damaged nearby houses. Fortunately, St Philip’s School survived with minor damage.
After the war, Lieutenant Colonel Tibbits returned. He restarted St Philip’s. His wife, Muriel Atkinson, became the school housekeeper. She played a vital role in its growth.
Upon Tibbits’ death in 1967, David Atkinson took over. He ensured St Philip’s maintained its Catholic identity. Harry Biggs-Davison, a former pupil, later became headmaster.
Today, St Philip’s School continues to thrive. Alexander Thomas is the current Head Master. The school is expanding. It will soon accommodate boys aged 4 to 13.
The curriculum combines academics, moral values, and religious education. Creative and sporting opportunities are also emphasized. St Philip’s aims to nurture each boy. The school wants every pupil to feel valued.
The school has strong connections with top senior schools. Many St Philip’s boys progress to Eton, Harrow, and other prestigious institutions. Almost half of the boys since 2019 have moved onto Eton, Harrow, City of London or Dulwich.
St Philip’s offers a broad curriculum. This curriculum prepares pupils for the ISEB Common Pre-Test. It also covers world history.
Boys participate in sports at Barn Elms. The school uses 30 acres of facilities. Sports include cricket, rugby, hockey, and athletics. Music is essential. There is a strong choral tradition.
Pastoral care is a priority at St Philip’s School. Parents describe it as an extended family.
Head Teacher Alexander Thomas emphasizes fun. St Philip Neri, the school’s patron saint, embodies joy and humor. The school balances hard work with a nurturing environment. St Philip’s prepares boys for leading schools.
