A shimmering reflection. That’s how it started. The unexpected image of Our Lady of Grace appeared in the monstrance at St Philip’s Church. It was a Eucharistic coincidence recounted by Father James Liebner. He described the miraculous alignment of light and angles.

St Philip the Apostle Church stands proudly in San Francisco. It’s a place of rich history and vibrant community. Founded in 1910 it served a growing Catholic population. The church initially began as a converted workshop. A temporary church was built on Elizabeth Street in 1912.

The current church building was constructed in 1925. Architect John J Foley designed the Gothic Revival style. Asymmetrical towers and pier buttresses mark its exterior. Inside the nave you’ll notice the barrel vaulted ceiling supported by large columns. The gothic arches align with stained-glass windows. These windows depict saints the Virgin Mary and Jesus.

The church has two choir lofts. They facilitate antiphonal singing a testament to Father Jerome Hannigan’s musical inclination. Above and below these lofts are more beautiful windows. They show scenes from the life of Christ and Mary. The Second Vatican Council influenced changes in 1964. The altar was repositioned to face the congregation.

The church school and convent were built in 1938 in a Spanish Colonial style. Architect Martin Rist designed them. Father John R Cantillon started popular whist card games. These helped raise funds for the school. They became a beloved social event in Noe Valley.

The shamrock painted on the sidewalk and the matching street stripe are reminders of the Irish community. It’s a visual tribute to the many Irish families who helped build St Philip’s. German families shared the neighborhood contributing to the rich tapestry of the parish. The story of St Philip’s is one of faith resilience and community. It’s a testament to the enduring spirit of the people who built and sustained this beautiful church. Today St Philip’s continues to be a spiritual home welcoming all.
