“A school? Here?” you might ask, surprised. Yes, right here at St Philip Presbyterian Church, education has always played a vital role. Though you won’t find a traditional schoolhouse within these walls, the spirit of learning and community upliftment echoes strongly. St Philip Presbyterian Church wasn’t always what you see today. This house of worship shares its roots with a noble endeavor – St. Philip’s School and Community Center. The story begins in the late 1940s in South Dallas. The Episcopal Diocese, alongside local African-American Episcopalians, felt a calling. They dreamt of establishing a beacon of faith and education for the Black community, a place where young minds could flourish. And so, St. Philip’s School and Community Center was born. As the years passed, the needs of the community evolved. While the original church saw a decline, the school and community center thrived, growing into a testament to the power of education. In 1959, a new gymnasium was erected, a testament to the community’s commitment to nurturing both body and mind. It was in 1967 that the seed of formal education was planted with the establishment of a daycare center. Under the visionary leadership of Dr. Terry Flowers, who joined in 1983, the school reached new heights. From humble beginnings as a PreK3 through 1st-grade school, it transformed into a highly competitive institution, nurturing students up to 8th grade. St Philip’s School and Community Center stands as a beacon of academic rigor and moral strength, a living legacy of a community’s dedication to its children’s futures.
